“Cultivate Growth” in Study Groups

The ‘second C’ in our 3Cs ministry process calls us to “Cultivate Growth in relationship with God and one another.” So we offer Study Groups every Sunday morning as a focused learning environment where we can together shape a biblical Christian worldview and “take every thought captive” to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). These are both (a) Sunday School classes (age-based groups who go through a continual curriculum, found at www.standardlesson.com) and (b) “Study Groups”, which are modular classes, with a definite beginning and ending, that seek to provide intergenerational learning environments (we include our High Schoolers!) where young and old can learn together. Like Sunday School, our Study Groups stress biblical and theological study first and foremost, but we also will occasionally provide topical learning that allows the flexibility to offer introductory classes about our congregation (“3CLIFE”), development and training for church leaders and teachers, and even prayer groups and recovery classes.

As far as ordering books and materials… That is up to each individual class member. Resources for ordering online are all listed below. Feel free to order one book per married couple, if you’d like. If you have any questions about what exactly to order or how materials are being handled, please email the class facilitator (email addresses listed below). Also, if you need any financial help, please email Scott Wakefield, our Senior Minister, and we will ensure anonymous help!

Most of our quarterly Study Groups run the entire 12 (or so) weeks (unless otherwise noted). Here are the Study Groups beginning Sun, Jan 1:

  • “3CLIFE” - A brief 4-weeks introduction to all-things First Christian Church. Come connect with our mission by learning all about the 3CLIFE. Click here to find out more specific info. Moderated by Scott Wakefield (email Scott). Click here to sign up online.
  • “Colossians: The Gospel of the Centrality of Christ” - Christ is central to everything; the world we live in was made through Him, for Him. Paul’s letter to the church at Colossae demonstrates and declares this in a loving, yet firm, letter of admonition. Ultimately, we must come to grips with the sovereignty of Christ, and what response is appropriate to His Kingship and we must answer the question, “are we living like the church of Colossae, USA?” If Christ is tugging at your heart strings, and you want to improve your relationship to Him, both prayerfully and with your feet, then this is the class for you. Materials will be handed out in class. Moderated by Mike Schubert (email Mike). Click here to sign up online.
  • “Biblical Training” – Old Testament survey from www.biblicaltraining.org (audio recordings of top-tier seminary professors and pastors provided free of charge). This class covers the content of each OT book, provides a chronological sweep of OT history, gives answers to particular questions, and discusses various ministry issues. Learners are encouraged to follow along in their own reading to benefit from the high quality teaching! Materials will be handed out in class. Moderated by Mark Liebert & Chuck Bowlin (email Mark or email Chuck). Click here to sign up online.
  • “When God Calls” – This class will review some of the well known and not so well known examples of people receiving God’s call. We will look at the nature of the call and the impact it had on that person’s life. We will also discuss how we can apply these stories to our lives today. Any materials will be handed out in class. Moderated by Steve Duer (email Steve). Click here to sign up online.

You can also sign up by writing the name(s) of student(s) and class(es) on the back of a Connection Card during Sunday Morning Worship service!
